→ Born This Way Foundation to launch at Harvard

gaywrites:

Lady Gaga’s recently announced Born This Way Foundation for youth empowerment will launch on February 29 with a kickoff event at Harvard University. The Harvard Graduate School of Education is among many organizations that will work together on “BTWF” to reach out to youth and promote self-acceptance and self-confidence.

“BTWF, a non-profit charitable organization, will address issues like self-confidence, well-being, anti-bullying, mentoring and career development and advocacy,” the release said. “With a focus on digital mobilization to create positive change, BTWF will lead youth into a braver new society where each individual is accepted and loved as the person they were born to be.”

Road trip to Harvard, anyone?

→ Mayors unite for marriage equality

gaywrites:

More than 75 mayors from around the country have joined forces to declare their support for marriage equality.

Mayors for the Freedom to Marry” is hoping to garner nationwide support for marriage equality starting at a local level, including support from the mayors of the country’s four largest cities and mayors from states where marriage equality will soon be on the ballot. The full list of mayors is here

This is absolutely fantastic news. Local leaders are speaking out for what’s right, and I’m sure this list is only going to keep growing. Way to go.

For starters…

hey guys,

if you don’t already know me, here’s a quick run-down: i’m a straight, fourteen year old girl. i go to saint paul conservatory for performing artists (spcpa).

i’m interested in making a documentary/short film of some sort on LBGT and/or gay pride/rights and how as humans, people of the gay community have been mistreated for centuries. i feel that since a great deal of the student body at spcpa is a part of or supports the gay community, that that would be a good place to start.

i don’t want to make just another gay independent film, i want to start something bigger than that. i want people to join in and fight for gay rights, to start youtube channels and blogs updating people on the successes and blows the LBGT community faces in the steps to legalizing gay marriage and enforcing gay rights. i want people to make videos and youtubes and spread the word, make a movement, some sort of revolution, gain the attention of people outside of Minnesota.

if you’re interested in helping in the making of the documentary/blog/etc, please let me know! this isn’t a one-person job, this requires the help of many many people! facebook, email, text, or ask me in the question or comment box above; the more the merrier!

thanks!

→ Two votes to Washington marriage equality?

gaywrites:

According to a recent Associated Press tally, 23 state senators in the state of Washington are in favor of passing a marriage equality bill.

That means the bill, which will be introduced within a few days, only needs two more votes to pass. Washington would be the seventh state allowing marriage equality, possibly with New Jersey following.

The numbers come from an Associated Press tally earlier this week, which found 22 of 49 lawmakers in favor of the bill and 18 opposed. Democratic Sen. Rosemary McAuliffe is the most recent addition to those numbers, and said that the legislation is “long overdue.”

Among those who have pledged their support for the bill are two Republican senators, Steve Litzow and Cheryl Pflug.

We can do this.
